Dr. Theresa Walunas, CHiP’s Associate Director, speaks at NU’s Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute
CHiP’s Associate Director, Theresa Walunas, PhD, was invited to present at Northwestern University’s Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS) Biomedical Informatics Data Science (BIDS) talk series last week. Dr. Walunas’s talk, “Using an Integrated Medical Records Dataset to Explore Health Outcomes in Patients with Autoimmune Disease,” examined the challenges surrounding developing a complete understanding of patients with complex diseases and their care, given that those patients often visit multiple institutions. Focusing on the health outcomes for people with systemic lupus erythematosus using Chicago HealthLNK, a local integrated medical record dataset, Dr. Walunas demonstrated how care fragmentation is associated with increased risk of severe comorbidities, particularly for patients with complex diseases.
