Each year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) continues an ongoing effort to improve the Quality Payment Program through updated policy. In light of the COVID-19 public health emergency, they have limited 2021 proposals to focus on the highest priorities for the program. Proposed changes include:

  • Delaying participation through MIPS Value Pathways (MVP) while introducing the complementary APM Performance Pathway (APP)
  • Modifying category weights
  • Basing MIPS Quality benchmarks on the performance period rather than a historical period
